  • 1/3rd of adults are not aware of shingle’s debilitating symptoms
  • Less than 30% of adults are aware that a free vaccine is available for people aged 70-79

Background:

Shingles occurs mostly in people over 50 years of age. It presents as a painful rash of small blisters which usually appears on one side of the face or body causing severe pain. A complication known as post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) can result. As people get older, the likelihood of long term pain increases. There are two zoster vaccines available in Australia, one of which is free for people aged 70 through the NIP. A single catch up dose will be funded under the NIP for adults 71–79 years of age until 31 October 2023.

  • Our latest research shows that a quarter of adults are still not aware that HPV has the potential to cause cancer
  • Over one third of adults are not aware there is a free vaccine for people under 20 years of age

Background:

The HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is known to cause a variety of cancers. Around 90% of Australians will get HPV at some point in their lives.

Immunisation against HPV is safe and effective. In Australia, the HPV vaccine is routinely available for girls and boys in high school, but is also available through your GP if you miss out on the school program. HPV vaccine is recommended as a two-dose schedule and is free on the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for boys and girls.

Background:

Most meningococcal disease occurs in children aged under five years of age and in older adolescents and young adults. People with meningococcal disease can become extremely unwell very quickly. A vaccine is free for certain age groups as part of the National Immunisation Program (NIP).

  • More than 2/3s of adults are not aware that pertussis vaccination is recommended for people 50 and over
  • Pertussis can be life-threatening if passed on to babies

Background:

Pertussis, also known as Whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory infection.  Severe complications, which occur almost exclusively in unvaccinated people, include pneumonia (lung infection), hypoxic encephalopathy (lack of oxygen to the brain) and death. Although the infection is mild in adults, if passed on to vulnerable babies it can be life-threatening.

Vaccination is the only form of prevention.  Children are eligible for pertussis vaccination under the National Immunisation Program.  In Australia, it is recommended that children receive a 5-dose schedule of pertussis vaccine.

  • Pneumococcal disease vaccination is funded by the National Immunisation Program for children, for Indigenous adults 50 years and older and Non-indigenous adults 70 years and older.

Background:

Pneumococcal disease is an illness caused by bacterial infection, and is a leading cause of serious illness among Australian children under two years of age, and is a frequent cause of death in the elderly. The rates are higher among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, especially in central Australia.

Pneumococcal infection is a common cause of middle ear infection, but may also cause pneumonia, meningitis, and septicaemia (‘blood poisoning’).

  • Only ¼ of adults are aware that they can receive their COVID-19 and flu vaccines at the same time

Background

COVID-19 is caused by a new form of coronavirus. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause respiratory infections. These can range from the common cold to more serious diseases.
There are currently 4 Covid-19 vaccines registered for use in Australia, consisting of 2 primary doses, with a 3rd dose (booster) for people 16 years and older. A 4th dose is now recommended for people 65 and over, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years and older, or people with serious underlying health conditions, to be given 4 months (or longer) after the 3rd dose.
