The Immunisation Coalition would like to reassure the public that under the National Immunisation Program (NIP), the Federal Government has ordered enough vaccine to ensure all of those who qualify for the vaccine are able to receive it.
If you are 65 years of age or older, please make a booking with your GP to obtain your free influenza shot. Yours is an enhanced vaccine, especially design for your age group. Due to very high demand however, there have been some delays in supplies reaching medical clinics, which is why it is important to speak to the clinic first.
Influenza vaccine for children 6 months to <5 years of age has also been assured. In addition, the government has placed orders for an additional influenza vaccine for those who are at higher risk of serious complications, including people with underlying medical conditions, pregnant women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, all of whom are entitled to free vaccine under the NIP.
There are also additional influenza vaccines for those who do not qualify for free vaccine, which can be obtained through your GP, or at some pharmacies.
There will be a record number of influenza vaccines this year (16.5 million compared to 13 million in 2019). Even so, please be patient when seeking your influenza vaccination and remember, our general practitioners and pharmacists are working hard to obtain supplies in a timely fashion to keep up with the high demand from the public.
