About

Webinar objective:

To update and educate primary care healthcare professionals on the availability and administration of a new NIP-listed maternal RSV vaccine to protect newborn babies from RSV infection.

Learning outcomes:

  1. Understanding the burden of RSV in babies and young infants and the importance of prevention strategies for this population
  2. Understand the role of maternal immunisation in helping prevent RSV from birth
  3. Apply the latest Australian Immunisation Handbook recommendations to implement the new RSV vaccine alongside other vaccines for pregnant women
  4. Highlight additional immunisation options for young infants at high risk of developing lower tract respiratory infection w/wo having had maternal RSV vaccination
  5. Enhance patient consultation skills for discussing maternal vaccination, including the RSV vaccine, with pregnant women.

 

Dr Rodney Pearce AM (Chair)

Dr Rodney Pearce AM is a country and city GP and Medical Officer of Health for the Eastern Health Authority (HA), Adelaide. Dr Pearce became a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) on Australia Day 2012. He received the award for his long-standing service to medicine as a General Practitioner, through contributions to national medical organisations and to education.
He is the current Chair of the Immunisation Coalition.

 

Dr Srimal Nawana

Dr Srimal Nawana is an experienced GP working in metropolitan South Australia.She graduated in 1994 and completed her FRACGP in 1998.
She has a strong interest in health promotion and preventative health.
She has extensive experience in ATSI health having worked in metropolitan services in the past and currently delivering rural medical care once or twice per year to both ATSI and non ATSI health services.
Her broad experience has helped her to adapt her practice to a spectrum of patients, including patients with optimal resources and those who have very limited access to health care.

Sonja Elia

After choosing to specialise in Immunisation in 2003, Ms Sonja Elia became an integral part of the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Immunisation service and in 2017, became Victoria’s first Nurse Practitioner (NP) in the field of Immunisation. She has a particular interest in vaccine hesitancy, special risk groups, needle phobia, BCG vaccination and immunisation education. Sonja has received multiple awards including the Dame Elizabeth Murdoch Nursing Development scholarship and the RCH Chairman’s medal. She is a current member of the Immunisation Coalition, a teaching associate with the Monash University NP program and holds honorary positions with the University of Melbourne, Department of General Practice and the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute.

Jenny Trieu

Jenny Trieu is a pharmacist based in Walkerville, South Australia, with over 14 years of experience in community pharmacy. She is a vaccination trained pharmacist who regularly delivers immunisations under the National Immunisation Program (NIP), including maternal RSV vaccines such as Abrysvo, as well as influenza, pertussis, and COVID-19 vaccines.

Jenny is a strong advocate for increasing vaccination rates and takes a proactive approach to patient education. She integrates vaccine conversations into everyday pharmacy interactions, particularly with expecting parents, to ensure they feel informed, supported and confident in their decisions.

With a practical, patient-focused approach, Jenny is passionate about making immunisation accessible and convenient, helping to protect both mothers and newborns through timely vaccination.

Outside of work, Jenny is a proud mum of four and enjoys the lively chaos of family life, balancing her professional role with quality time at home.

She’s excited to join the panel and contribute her perspective from the community pharmacy front lines.
